Every welded job ends the same way: someone picks up a grinder. Prep before the weld and finishing after it can eat half your day, so the abrasives you choose decide how good the day feels.

Cheap discs wear out in minutes and clog. The right ones cut faster, last longer and leave a surface that takes paint properly.

Start with the full abrasives range

The abrasives category is broad, which is useful but also a bit overwhelming. Think about the job in stages: removing material, blending it and finishing it. Different products do different stages.

A typical metal job runs like this. Grind or cut with heavy-duty discs, blend with flap discs or belts, refine with fine grit and polish if the finish matters.

Grit, in plain terms

Low numbers cut aggressively and leave deep scratches. High numbers cut gently and leave a fine finish. The golden rule is to work up through grits without skipping too many, because a coarse scratch left behind needs a lot of fine sanding to remove.

Match pad and machine

A pad that's too hard on a curved panel digs in. A soft pad on a flat weld rounds the edges off. Check the pad diameter fits your sander and the disc size fits your pad, then look at the sanders that suit them.

Look after the hook and loop

Dust and heat wear out the hook-and-loop grip. If discs start flying off mid-job, the pad is usually the problem, not the disc. Replace worn pads before they cost you a ruined finish.

Other discs for the grinder

For heavy jobs, reach for grinding discs and metal cutting discs. For blending and finishing, flap and mop discs combine cutting and smoothing, while fibre sanding discs are sturdy choices for weld cleanup on steel. Stainless needs its own discs, and using steel-contaminated abrasives on stainless leaves iron particles that later rust.

Belt sanders and sanding belts

For flat surfaces, edges and repetitive finishing, a belt sander beats a disc on speed and consistency. The belt gives a long, even cutting surface that stays cooler than a small disc doing the same work.

Where belt sanders shine

Deburring cut edges, blending welds on flat bar, shaping small parts and taking a surface back to a uniform finish. Metalworkers use them to sharpen tools and knife-makers to grind bevels.

A few habits that help

Let the belt do the cutting rather than leaning on it. Keep the work moving so you don't burn a flat spot, and mind your fingers, because a moving belt takes skin without complaint. Sparks fly, so keep flammable material and dust away from the machine.

Needle scalers for scale, rust and paint

Needle scalers hit surfaces with a bundle of hardened needles. They chip away rust, weld slag, scale and old coatings, and they reach into corners a grinder can't.

Our needle scalers are air tools, so you need enough compressed air. Compare the compressors and air hoses and reels to make sure supply keeps pace, and use air fittings that match your hose.

They suit ship repair, farm machinery, structural steel and old trailers, or anything covered in a decade of corrosion. Vibration builds up over a long day, so take breaks and wear anti-vibration gloves. Full eye and ear protection applies, along with a respirator when the coating could contain hazardous material such as old lead paint.

Polishing and fine finishing

If appearance counts, move on to metal polishing products, mop wheels, non-woven rolls and Scotch-Brite pads. Stainless especially responds to a graded finish.

Cost per job beats cost per disc

The cheapest disc rarely costs the least. A quality abrasive removes more metal before it wears out, produces less heat and saves labour. If you pay someone by the hour, the arithmetic is easy.
