Automatic Driving Lessons in Ireland: What Beginners Should Know

Learning to drive is a major milestone, but getting comfortable behind the wheel can take time. For some people, the biggest challenge is managing the clutch and changing gears while keeping an eye on the road. This is one reason more learners are considering automatic driving lessons in Ireland.

An automatic car handles gear changes for you, leaving you to concentrate on steering, braking, road positioning and observing other road users. It can be a good option for beginners who want a simpler introduction to driving, particularly when learning in busy urban areas such as Dublin.

If you are thinking about learning in an automatic car, there are a few things worth understanding before booking your first lesson.

Why Are More Learners Choosing Automatic Driving Lessons?

Automatic transmission removes the need to operate a clutch pedal or change gears manually. The car selects the appropriate gear as you accelerate or slow down.

For someone learning to drive for the first time, this can reduce the number of things they need to manage during the early lessons.

Consider driving through a busy Dublin junction. You need to check your mirrors, watch for pedestrians, judge the traffic and position your vehicle correctly. In a manual car, you must also coordinate the clutch and gears.

An automatic vehicle removes that additional task.

This does not mean that learning to drive becomes effortless. You still need to develop good observation skills, understand road rules, and make safe decisions independently.

Automatic lessons may be particularly suitable for:

Complete beginners who have never driven before.
Learners who struggle with clutch control.
People who feel nervous in heavy traffic.
Drivers switching from manual to automatic.
Learners who prefer a simpler driving experience.

At Next Level Driving School, automatic lessons are available for beginners and learners who want to improve their existing driving skills.

Automatic vs Manual Driving Lessons: What Is the Difference?

Both types of driving lessons teach the same essential road safety principles. The main difference is how the vehicle operates.

Feature	Automatic car	Manual car
Clutch pedal	Not required	Required
Gear changes	Handled by the car	Controlled by the driver
Moving off	Generally simpler	Requires clutch coordination
Hill starts	No clutch balancing	Requires clutch control
Traffic	Fewer controls to manage	More coordination required
Driving test	Automatic vehicle	Manual vehicle

The right choice depends on what you want from your driving experience.

If you expect to drive automatic vehicles regularly, learning in an automatic makes sense. However, if you want the flexibility to drive both manual and automatic cars, consider taking your test in a manual vehicle.

Does an Automatic Driving Licence Have Restrictions in Ireland?

Yes. This is an important point to understand before choosing automatic driving lessons.

If you pass your Irish Category B driving test in an automatic vehicle, your full driving licence will carry Code 78. This restricts you to driving vehicles with automatic transmission in that category.

You cannot use that licence to drive a manual car.

If you later decide that you want to drive manual vehicles, you will need to obtain an unrestricted Category B learner permit and pass another driving test in a manual car.

The Road Safety Authority's guidance on automatic driving tests explains this restriction.

It is worth thinking about your future driving requirements before deciding which type of lessons to take.

How Do Automatic Driving Lessons Work?

Automatic driving lessons follow a structured learning process. Your instructor will introduce the controls, help you understand how the car responds and gradually move towards more challenging road situations.

1. Understanding Automatic Transmission

During your first lesson, you will become familiar with the vehicle's main controls.

Most automatic cars have the following gear selector positions:

P – Park: Used when the vehicle is parked.
R – Reverse: Used when reversing.
N – Neutral: Disconnects the drive from the wheels.
D – Drive: Used for normal forward driving.

Your instructor will explain when and how to use each position safely.

You will also learn about the accelerator, brake, mirrors, indicators and steering controls.

2. Moving Off and Stopping

In an automatic car, moving away is generally more straightforward because there is no clutch to coordinate.

You will practise selecting a drive, checking your surroundings and moving away safely. Your instructor will also teach you how to control your speed and stop smoothly.

These basic skills need to become consistent before progressing to busier roads.

3. Learning on Different Roads

Once you are comfortable with the vehicle, lessons can move towards more demanding driving situations.

This may include residential streets, roundabouts, junctions, traffic lights and roads with higher traffic volumes.

In Dublin, learners need to become comfortable dealing with changing traffic conditions. Your instructor can gradually introduce these situations as your ability improves.

4. Developing Independent Driving Skills

As you progress, your instructor will expect you to make more decisions independently.

You will need to judge safe gaps in traffic, anticipate hazards, and maintain appropriate road positioning.

The goal is to become a responsible driver who can handle everyday journeys without relying on constant instructions.

Do You Need to Complete EDT in an Automatic Car?

Yes. Choosing an automatic vehicle does not exempt you from Essential Driver Training.

Most first-time car learner permit holders in Ireland must complete 12 EDT sessions with an RSA-approved Approved Driving Instructor (ADI).

The programme covers essential driving skills, including:

Vehicle controls and safety checks.
Correct road positioning.
Changing direction.
Progression management.
Anticipation and reaction.
Sharing the road.
Driving safely through traffic.
Speed management.
Driving calmly.
Night driving.

Your instructor records completed sessions through the RSA's MyEDT system.

The training applies whether you choose automatic or manual driving lessons. You should also allow time to practise between sessions so that you can build on what you have learned.

You can find more information about the training requirements on the RSA's Essential Driver Training page.

For learners in Dublin, Next Level Driving School also provides automatic and EDT driving lessons.

How Many Automatic Driving Lessons Will You Need?

There is no fixed number of lessons that guarantees you will be ready for your driving test.

Some learners have previous driving experience and become comfortable with the vehicle relatively quickly. Others need more time to develop confidence, particularly when dealing with junctions, roundabouts and busy traffic.

Your progress will depend on several factors:

How regularly you attend lessons.
Whether you practise between sessions.
Your previous driving experience.
How comfortable you feel in different traffic conditions.
The areas that need further attention.

Completing the 12 mandatory EDT sessions is an important requirement, but it should not be treated as a guarantee of driving test readiness.

Your instructor can help assess your progress and recommend further lessons where necessary.

Preparing for Your Automatic Driving Test

The Irish driving test assesses your ability to drive safely and independently. Taking the test in an automatic vehicle does not remove the need to demonstrate the required driving skills.

Before booking or attending your test, make sure you have completed the applicable learner-driver requirements.

You should be comfortable with:

Observation and mirror checks: Examiners expect you to remain aware of what is happening around your vehicle.

Junctions and roundabouts: You must approach correctly, judge traffic and proceed safely.

Road positioning: Maintain an appropriate position and respond correctly to road markings and signs.

Reversing manoeuvres: Practise the required reversing exercises and maintain proper observation throughout.

Speed control: Adjust your speed to suit the road, traffic and weather conditions.

Independent driving: Follow directions and make safe decisions without depending on constant guidance.

A pre-test lesson can help identify weaknesses before your examination. A mock driving test is also useful because it gives you an idea of how your driving may be assessed.

If you are approaching your test date, ask your instructor to review your performance and focus on the areas that need improvement.

Tips for Getting the Most From Your Automatic Driving Lessons

A few good habits can make a noticeable difference to your progress.

Keep your lessons regular. Long gaps can make it harder to remember what you have learned. A consistent schedule gives you more opportunities to practise.

Do not rely entirely on the automatic transmission. The car manages the gears, but you remain responsible for everything happening around you.

Pay attention to observation. Mirror checks, blind-spot awareness and anticipation are essential parts of safe driving.

Speak up when something feels unclear. If you struggle with a manoeuvre, ask your instructor to explain it again.

Learn from feedback. Take note of mistakes and work on correcting them during your next lesson.

Most importantly, give yourself time. Confidence develops through experience, and every lesson should help you become more comfortable with the road.
